Institute of Technology Tallaght

Institute of Technology Tallaght improves communication and reduces travel costs with Unified Communications from Ergo.

The Client
ITT Dublin was established under the aegis of Co. Dublin Vocational Educational Committee and opened its doors to the first group of students in September 1992. The Institute has provided Tallaght and the South Dublin region with an extremely well designed building fitted out with state of the art technology in highly equipped lecture rooms, laboratories and workshops. Since January 1993, the Institute has been an independent third level institution under the Regional Technical Institute’s Act. The policies and business of the Institute are overseen by a statutory governing body.

The Challenge
ITT Dublin as an organisation wanted to improve communication and collaboration both within the Institute and with external organisations. Improved  facilities for communication between staff and students were recognised as an area that could benefit from increased investment in technologies. Facilities were also required to assist students who wished to work collaboratively. In addition, the IT department recognised the potential savings that could be achieved through the use of technology to reduce the time spent travelling to meetings outside the Institute.

Why Microsoft Unified Communications from Ergo?
ITT Dublin had looked at other systems including LiveServer, but realised that this wasn’t the most ideal system for them. Having heard about Microsoft Unified Communications and following an Ergo demonstration of the software, they were impressed with its features and functionality.

For ITT Dublin, the key benefits of Microsoft Unified Communications are its IM feature, the phone, networking and conferencing system and the way one person can collaborate with another so easily, editing and saving documents. ITT Dublin sent out a tender to many unified communications providers, and Ergo won it based on their experience, competitive pricing and expertise.

The Result

ITT Dublin are still experiencing new benefits as they continue to use this software. The conferencing and live meeting functionality of Unified Communications has been successfully adopted by staff and students, resulting in a reduction in travel costs. The system is budget friendly and allows for instant communication and collaboration between staff and students (e.g. instant messaging and instant answers!) It was originally thought by all leading Microsoft Unified Communications suppliers in Ireland that Microsoft Unified Communications would not work with Cucimoc (Cisco Call Manager), but Ergo were successful in making both systems work alongside each other. This is fantastic news for all Cisco houses looking to implement Microsoft Unified Communications.
