Finding your IT Utopia

Recently I took time out to reflect on “why do we do what we do”. It sounds like such a basic question; and that’s because it is. In today’s busy work and life schedule, we should make more time to stand back and ask these basic questions because the simplest of questions can reignite drive and creativity.

To answer this question, one must put themselves in the customer’s shoes. This is something a service provider should do more often.

When in these shoes…

I realised that I must pursue the goal of having a positive impact on my business. When assessing how to do this, I need to design, deploy and run technology solutions to enable my workforce to proficiently collaborate, make our products, process our goods, manage the delivery of service, make the right decisions, and digitally engage with the marketplace.

In my head (still in these customer’s shoes) I now have my utopian vision of seamless integration, a mobile workforce, a digital business paradise. Now I must consider - will I reach that utopian scenario? When? Will the goal posts keep moving? What happens when I scale? What if I acquire? What if my compliance requirements change? How can I focus on my business success? How can I positively impact?

I have too many things to consider in this multi-dimensional fast paced market, which means I need a partner that I can trust to support my success.

So, on that basis, what makes a great IT Partner?

1. The gift of business mindshare (a run Partner)

Service Operations is an art form. A great IT Partner will take care of your run activities for you, providing managed services for infrastructure, applications and general service operations. A great IT Partner will provide you with real time insight into your business services linking to IT Services. You will have your IT run activities taken care of, your SLA’s being met, and insight at your fingertips with inherent cybersecurity.

What does that really do? Does it mean that you have de-risked? That you are on a sound footing? Yes, but it also means so much more. It allows you to offer your business digital mindshare. It is such a basic thing, but if your service operations are in top order then you will not be interrupted with bad news daily, you will not be worried about what will happen next, you will not be dragged into a detail operational debate at every strategy meeting. There is nothing worse than getting to that business ideation place in your mind and then suddenly come crashing back down to earth with a mission critical outage.

A great IT partner will run your IT operations smoothly so that you can offer your business digital mindshare so that your business can benefit from your digital creativity. Without steady state operations, you will never get out of the weeds.

2. Digital enablement, platforms and augmentation

On achieving rapid service operations steady state, a great IT Partner can then enable you to succeed in digitally enabling your business through digital platform and technology expertise. The important thing to understand about both workforce and digital business enablement is that it is driven by you (the client) and your business. You should not outsource digital business or workforce solutions. It is your business - you need to differentiate, you need to innovate. You understand your business better than anyone else.

A great IT partner will augment and enable you to succeed on your ideas, on your terms, bringing expertise on digital platforms, workforce solutions and data science.

3. Commercial Flexibility

The days of lock them in and sweat the contract are long gone (if anyone is treating you like this then stop and call Ergo immediately!) A great IT Partner is commercially disruptive and flexible.

The IT landscape is evolving at a phenomenal pace and the business marketplace is changing every day. In this context, your business needs an IT Partner who can respond in an agile and flexible way.
