Capacity to Change Drives Next Phase of Ergo Evolution

Ergo has created 180 new jobs and expanded its overseas operation in the five years since the recession began, bucking the economic trend with a capacity for reinvention that has kept the company growing for over 21 years. “The 2008 crash was crucial in Ergo’s evolution because we knew then that we had to build our business outside of Ireland,” said John Purdy, Chief Executive. “We couldn’t leave ourselves vulnerable to the local economy and set about devising a two-tier approach to the market.”

In Ireland Ergo is a leading supplier of a broad range of Information and Communications Technology. Overseas, it offers boutique services, solving pain points for large organisations. The bulk of the new jobs support international business activity, including:

  • Fenergo, a spin-off company providing client lifecycle management software solutions to some of the biggest     financial institutions in the world
  • FlowForma, an enterprise forms management tool that is already used by nearly 30,000 hospital administrators in the UK
  • A new cloud practise with powerful technical expertise, most recently leveraged by the Ardagh Group in North America where it migrated 6,500 email users across 13 US locations to Office 365
  • Intelligent Document Services, run on pan-European platforms by major brands including Primark, eBay, ICON and Fexco

Capacity to Change Drives Next Phase of Ergo Evolution

These are the latest developments in a company built for change. When Ergo opened for business just over 21 years ago, it was a manufacturing plant for printer components. Since then, its progress has mirrored the changes that have shaped the Irish economy, moving from manufacturing to infrastructure services, and on to the development of bespoke software and product focused solutions for Irish and now global customers.

Recent Gartner research on the future for IT Services companies said success would depend on “the audacity of visionary thinking” and the ability to “industrialise and productise, without losing sight of service value". Nothing new here for Ergo CEO John Purdy. Such skills have been core to his company’s success. “Change is in our DNA. The culture of the company is predicated on partnering with clients and staying ahead of the curve, never standing still and spotting opportunities before everyone else,” he said.

Milestones in a 21-year Success Story 

1993     Ergo co-founded by John Purdy as a Printer Specialist Company 

1996     Ergo starts offering document management services and moves to bigger premises
1998     Wins first Managed Print Service contact with Microsoft, a first for Ireland

2000     Ergo expands into professional services and software development
2004     Network Services division is established

2009     International subsidiary Fenergo is established
2010     Ergo acquires CDSoft
2013     Wins Microsoft Country Partner of the Year Award for the third time in four years
2014     Ergo wins Microsoft Cloud Partner of the Year

On cloud computing: “The cloud has huge benefits and potential; in five years time it won’t be a discussion it will be a given. You need to have a strategy that allows your customer to be comfortable with cloud services as you migrate them off-premises over time – if that’s a three-year or a five-year journey, then so be it”

On the need for change:
“You have to be paranoid about being relevant, about being able to make a 200 person payroll at the end of every month. And you have to drive the business along with like-minded employees who are never happy with the status quo”

On business growth:
“We never pat ourselves on the back because we’ve had another profitable year; we pat ourselves on the back because we’re getting new revenue from new income streams and new customers”

On preparing for the unknown:
“Running a business is like going on a bus journey. You have to have the right people on the bus even if they’re not in the right seats at the outset. You’re not always sure where you’re going, but you’ll have more chance of getting there if you have people onboard with the right aptitude and skills”
