In his role as managed services solution manager, George Dowling's responsibilities at Ergo include everything from traditional helpdesk support to cloud delivery, an immediate indication of how the company wants to present a comprehensive range of options.
"Ergo managed services has an option for every type of solution and we're encouraging customers to hand more and more components of their infrastructure to us," he said.
Working with Primark highlights how a new wave of Ergo cloud solutions are solving significant challenges for clients. "We took over the management of its SQL estate which saved them from having to recruit database analysts and administrators at around €100k a person. Instead, they draw down 30-40 days a year from Ergo at a fraction of the cost," said Dowling.
He also argued that they would benefit from a higher calibre expert because the Ergo employee would be used to working a range databases in different businesses and bring all that experience to bear on Primark.
The idea of turning underutilised SQL server environments into dynamic platforms for growth highlights how Ergo is reinventing itself and innovating with the cloud. It's part of a new portfolio of services that breaks down into three distinct offerings.
At the highest end is a "bell-and-whistle" private cloud, run out of a tier 4 data centre. Ergo will provision a multi-tenant environment that will give all benefits of cloud elasticity while negating doubts about where the data resides it stays in Ireland.
The next one down is an Ergo solution hosted on Microsoft Azure. Same agility and cost-effective PaaS infrastructure, but more suitable for organisations that can live with the vagaries of the public cloud.
"Azure products could be hosted anywhere in the world. They are more affordable, but come with less control," said Dowling.
Finally, there are Ergo's own brand offerings, run out of tier 2 data centres. Suitable for small businesses, they encompass everything from virtual desktop-as-a-service to hosted SQL and SharePoint. Entry-level products are online backup and disaster recovery solutions.
What all three share is transparency and Ergo's commitment to 99.9 per cent uptime, as well as the peace of mind that IT in frastructure is in safe hands.
"People can see where they can save costs. They get access to our experts, and we give them service-level guarantees and quarterly reviews, all wrapped up in an encompassing package that they can draw down as required," Dowling said.
