When insurance and pension provider Irish Life decided to change from an expensive mainframe platform to save money and improve efficiencies, it turned to HP and Ergo.
Irish Life’s mission critical administration application is called CLOAS and the key part of this is a mainframe-based and heavily customised version of an IT package. In addition to internal policy administration, It is also used online by customers for self-service policy administration.“The system represents a significant element of the company’s total operating costs and we were paying a premium for the mainframe environment it was based upon,” notes Barry Ryan, chief technical architect, Irish Life Group.
Upgrading the mainframe environment meant that these costs were constantly being forced up as the business grew. Securing the unique intellectual property captured in over three million lines of COBOL code, getting graduates to work on a very old technology and lack of functionality on the system were other were among other considerations. Irish Life decided that an SQL Server would deliver long term costs and technology advantages.
It then needed a hardware platform that could be trusted to run the critical CLOAS application. Following visits to the HP site in Boeblingen in Germany to test the capabilities of its servers, it was impressed with the results achieved on tests and working with HP and Ergo, it set about agreeing the optimum system configuration. Now the production environment consists of five servers in two clusters and a single set of tools and skills significantly easesthe IT management burden for the organisations.
Hardware and licence savings have been calculated at upto 2.5 million euro a year and among the benefits of the new system are that batch runtimes are reduced by 75 per cent, consistent responses times are delivered to cope with peaks in business demand and upgrade options are available to provide more flexible business support. “It says a lot about our faith in HP servers that we are now happy to move our core business systems onto HP kit,” says Barry Ryan
